Located toward the east of the Gulf of Finland at the inlet of the Neva River, Saint Petersburg is the northernmost city with more than one million people in the world. Quite often the city is described as the most Western Russian city and the “Venice of the North”.  Founded three centuries ago in 1703, Saint Petersburg was the capital of the Russian Empire for more than 200 years until Moscow became the capital in 1918 after the Russian Revolution of 1917. Throughout the city’s history the name has been changed from “Petrograd” (1914-1924), to “Leningrad” (1924-1991), to “Saint Petersburg” as it is has been known since.
