Located in northern Italy, Milan is the country’s second largest city and renowned as one of the world capitals of design and fashion. The city is also known as host of the 1906 World Exposition and is scheduled to host the 2015 Universal Expo. The etymology of the name can be traced back to Roman origins as Mediolanum; ‘lanum’ referring to ‘plain’, thus the name ‘in the midst of the plain’. The symbol of the city is a wool-bearing boar, which is a reference to the two Celtic peoples credited for founding the city, whose emblems were that of a ram and a boar. Piazza della Scala is somewhat small in scale but part of a much larger and important sequence of spaces within the city of Milan. This collection of spaces includes the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, in which the Piazza della Scala, as well as the Piazza del Duomo, is located along either end. Of these three places, the Piazza del Duomo is by far the oldest and most recognizable. The church itself dates back as far as the 5th century, and many renovations and additions were added over the following year. Even still, the space itself precedes that of the church, as it was once the site of the ancient Roman forum.
